Do you ever feel like you are constantly living in the “Twilight Zone”? That no matter where you turn or look there are people doing and saying things that lack all kinds of wisdom, civility, and simple common sense? Well, I can honestly say I feel like that quite frequently. Our contemporary world has lost its way. From overly opinionated social media posts and main stream media and commercials spewing deceitful messages everywhere you turn - To people thinking only of themselves (and doing whatever “makes them happy"), without caring about how their words or actions might and will impact others around them. Oh, and let's not forget to mention the “reality” shows and movies that portray life as a constantly loud, complex, violent, angry, and dramatic merry-go-round, and have ultimately contributed to the regression of our society on so many levels. It seems that not only common sense, but our reality as well, has been warped and dismantled beyond repair and is quite possibly on the brink of extinction throughout the entire world.

Luckily, there is one place where you can find all the common-sense advice and standards you will ever need in life! This place is the Bible. Specifically, Proverbs in the Bible is one of the most beneficial sections where God’s wisdom for His children comes to life. This section undeniably lays out common sense for all to know and live by. It expresses how simple common sense really is, and thus, in turn so is life if you let it be. There will always be obstacles in life, and temptations from others, but knowing that you actually have a choice and your own free will in how you react and compose yourself in these situations, is the best thing God gave us. He knows that with each obstacle we face, we may need some guidance, strength, and reassurance from Him. He never intended for our world and minds to be so chaotic and cluttered; nor for our society and world to lose its way through our overthinking, over analyzing, and overreacting. So, when you look at Proverbs, remember to step away from your own mind, open your heart, and step into God’s words on common sense.
Proverbs 2:6
“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
Proverbs 3:5
“Trust in and rely confidently on the LORD with all your heart And do not rely on your own insight or understanding.”
Proverbs 3:21
“My child, don’t lose sight of common sense and discernment. Hang on to them.”
Proverbs 8:5 (NIV)
“O simple ones, learn prudence; O fools, learn sense.”
Proverbs 9:12
“If you become wise, you will be the one to benefit. If you scorn wisdom, you will be the one to suffer.”
Proverbs 10:21
“The words of the godly encourage many, but fools are destroyed by their lack of common sense.”
Proverbs 13:20
“Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.”
Proverbs 14:12
“There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.”
Proverbs 17:16 (KJV)
“Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?”
Proverbs 18:1
“Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment.”
Proverbs 21:16
“The person who strays from common sense will end up in the company of the dead.”
Proverbs 27:12
“The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.”
Proverbs 28:26
“Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe.”
Of course, Proverbs can technically be interpreted however you want just to benefit yourself and your own personal views. But try not to do this. God made simple rules and commandments, and His vision of common sense is made with the same intent. And when living in and by the word of God, and exercising the common sense He intended for us all; We will surely be able to welcome love, kindness, simplicity, hope, and happiness into our daily lives.
Though Proverbs has many verses that promote God’s wisdom and advice on daily living, there are several more verses within the Bible that help us to understand the need we have for keeping God in our life. They remind us of the importance of keeping good morals and values as the Lord intended. So, look through your Bible, explore the many wonderful lessons and advice God has to offer you. Because like I have said before, if you lose your faith in God, you will lose your direction in life. So, keep your moral compass on track and continue to keep your faith in the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Psalm 14:1
“The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”
1 Corinthians 15:33
“Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”
